Bridging the Gap Between Your Values and Your Actions
At the heart of my coaching philosophy is the belief that your values (what’s in your heart!) and actions need to be aligned. When there’s a gap between what you believe and how you show up, things won’t just feel “off,” you can get stuck or worse, knocked off track to becoming your truest self.
I’ve found that bridging this gap is the best way to not only be an authentic leader, but to have the most impact. You can’t fake alignment. If your calendar, your conversations, and your choices are constantly working against what you care about most, burnout or resentment is sure to follow. But when your actions are rooted in what matters to you, you lead with clarity, confidence, and conviction.
Lead From the Inside Out
It starts with identifying your actual values. What things get you most excited, both in life and when you’re in your leadership role? What do these things you’re passionate about tell you about yourself? Once you’ve answered some of these questions, you can get curious (not judgmental!) about how these values are–or are not–showing up in your leadership.
I recommend doing a little check-in from time to time, too. Ask yourself:
Do my current boundaries reflect what I value?
Are my goals aligned with what energizes and excites me?
Do I lead others the way I want to be led?
Remember that bridging the gap is a practice; it will take time and effort. And the path will not be straightforward. But the more intentional you become, the more magnetic and meaningful your leadership will be (and the more fulfilled you will feel).
Why It Matters
When your values and actions align, you have a better chance to reach your desired outcome. You can make decisions with clarity, lead with conviction, and motivate the people around you to act. Misalignment, on the other hand, will only create confusion and burnout, which can unfortunately spread like a disease to the people you’re leading. Alignment can give the people you lead the freedom to do the same. It’s the difference between doing the work out of obligation and doing the work from a place of authenticity and purpose.
